District Grand Council of Warwickshire

Royal & Select Masters

The January meeting of Wretham Council 188 saw their now well-established Burns Night Celebration in all its glory. This was greatly enjoyed by members, their ladies and guests, and in particular W Bro David Clarke, who was the candidate for reception duly chosen as a Select Master in a lovely ceremony prior to the joyous festivities, with the traditional history presented by R Ill Comp David Rawlins, and who was welcomed into the Order by the District Grand Master R Ill Comp Peter Wellings.

The festivities included the ceremonial entrance of the (very tasty) Haggis, regally piped in by Ill Comp Robert Ashford, who then delivered the traditional address to it, confirming it was well and truly “warm-reekin, rich”. A full translation was included in the beautifully produced menu card for the evening, which also included quotes from The Bard’s work.

The whole evening was magnificently choreographed by Thrice Illustrious Master John Handley, who also delivered many entertaining anecdotes pertaining to Rabbie Burns himself to everyone’s delight. On behalf of everyone present, which as always included several District Officers, John and his team were thanked by the District Grand Master for organising such an enjoyable and successful evening.

Pictured are David Rawlins, David Clarke, John Handley, Rob Ashford and John Baynton (CofC). Also, Robert Ashford piping in the Haggis and afterwards gleefully trenching its gushing entrails.
