District Grand Council of Warwickshire

Royal & Select Masters

As part of the local community, Alcester freemasons were again invited to participate in the

annual Alcester Court Leet Parade and Church Service on a very chilly Sunday in January.

Our District Grand Master, R Ill Comp Peter Wellings, was once again pleased join in the
parade which made its way to the Church for the service, at which the new High Bailiff
Sharon Constable was present having already taken on the office on 9th October. Sharon
had promised to serve the Manor and the Court with integrity and diligence, promoting
mutual respect in the local community.

The Court Leet originated in 1424 in England in the Court Baron, a Court authorised by the
King and presided over by the Baron or landowner. It mainly dealt with matters relating to
the duties and services owed by the peasants or villeins (not Freemen) to the Lord of the
Manor or Baron.
These Courts are recognised for their ceremonial roles and maintain a connection to the
past, although their legal jurisdiction was abolished in 1977.
Pictured are representatives from local Lodges and Chapters and RSM Councils with the
District Grand Master. It should be noted that Ill Comp Andy Mills (3rd left), a member of
Apollo Lodge meeting in Alcester, was High Bailiff in 2009. Andy is also a member of
Royal & Select Masters in the neighbouring Wyvern District.
